Things you should know if you are planning to fix a sunroom roof include the following: preparation of tools and materials, resealing the frame, and replacing the glass panel.

Sunroom additions are usually built with glass panels to allow the natural light of the sun to enter the room. However, when the sealant that is used around the glass panels and frame becomes old and dry, it tends to crack and leaks result. When this happens, you can either call a professional to help you solve this problem, or you can solve the problem yourself and save money.

Preparation of tools and materials

The first thing you need to do when planning to fix the roof of your sunroom is to prepare all the necessary tools and materials. These tools and materials include the following: a ladder, a utility knife, a putty knife, a razor blade, caulk or sealant, and painter’s tape.

Resealing the frame

*Check glass panels

Carefully bring the ladder inside the room and place it on the floor. Check to see that the legs of the ladder are standing on solid and clear ground and are locked in place to avoid any potential for injury from falling. Then, climb up and check the seals around the frame and the glass panels. If the sealant appears cracked or dry, you will need to remove it.

*Remove old sealant

Using your putty knife cautiously remove all the old sealant material from around the frame. You can also make a cut across and into the sealant with your utility knife. This will help make the removal of the old sealant easier.

*Lift glass panel and remove remaining old sealant

After completing the removal of the sealant surrounding the frame and the glass panel, gently lift the glass panel upwards to take it off its frame. Place the glass on a clean and dry surface and check the edges for any remaining sealant. Scrape off any remaining sealant you find, as well as any from the exposed glass frame. To remove any excess sealant that is still adhered to the glass, you may use a razor blade. Just be cautious when handling the blade.

*Reseal the glass and frame

After you have removed all the old sealant from the exposed glass, leave the glass in place and transfer your attention towards the frame. Place an ample amount of fresh sealant or caulking material around the frame’s outside part. Then, gently position the glass panel back into its frame. Put a bead of caulk or sealant right around the glass panel at the frame’s edges.

Replace glass panel

*Use painter’s tape

Get the painter’s tape and place multiple strips of it over the middle of the window. This will allow the window to stay intact while being removed.

*Remove old sealant

Get your putty knife and carefully scrape off any old sealant that is surrounding the frame. You can also make the removal of the old sealant much easier by making a cut into it with a utility knife.

*Remove glass panel from frame

Lift the glass panel upwards and remove it from its frame. Place it on a flat surface. Then, scrape off the remaining old sealant from the frame.

*Reseal the glass and the frame

Put new sealant or caulking compound all around the frame. Then, carefully lift the new glass panel up and gently put it into position inside the frame. Put a bead of sealant all around the edges of the frame outside of it to finish the project.

Along with having a trash bin nearby to easily throw in the old material, you should also consider having someone to assist you in the project, especially during the removal and placement of the glass panel back into position.
