To get to the top bunk of the bunk bed, you can use the attached ladder, step on the mattress of the lower bunk and step on the head or foot board, use the head or foot board of the lower bunk bed as the stepping board, or ask someone to push you up the top bunk.
The question of how to safely get to the top bunk of the bunk bed may seem to have easy answers. Surprisingly, there are alternative ways of going up the top bunk when one way seems to be malfunctioned or dangerous. Here are ways you can choose to safely get to the top bunk of your bunk bed:
Use the attached ladder
Ideally, bunk beds should have a sturdy ladder attached where you can safely get up and down the top bunk of your bed. If you are making the bunk bed yourself, make sure you attach a ladder, preferably at the side where the leg is laid to avoid hazard and so as not to cause inconvenience to the person on the lower bunk. If kids are using the bunk bed, make sure to regularly check for possible hazards, such as loose steps or nails or screws that are slowly coming out of the surface. Make sure your kids do not skip a step and make sure they hold on tight when going up in order to avoid accidents.
Step on the mattress of the lower bunk and step on the head or foot board
Another way to get to the top bunk is to step on the mattress of the lower bunk, specifically at the side of the bed. Tightly hold on to the guard rail of the top bunk with both hands and step on the inside of the head board or foot board, whichever side is closest. Once you are in the position, pull yourself up and firmly set your other knee on the mattress of the top bunk. Again, make sure the head or foot board is sturdy before you climb up the bed. This method is not safe for little kids.
Use the head or foot board of the lower bunk bed as the stepping board
This next technique in going up the top bunk is not recommended for little kids. Older kids can do this with extra care. To get up of the top bunk, you need extra space either at the head or foot of the bed where you shall position yourself. Using one foot, step on the head or foot board and keep hold of the highest point you can reach at the top bunk before pulling yourself up. Put your other foot on the head or foot board of the top bunk and use the other leg again to swing towards the side of the head or foot board to get to the top bunk.
Ask someone to push you up the top bunk
The last technique to get to the top bunk without a ladder is to have another person assist you and give you a boost. You can step on somebody else’s hands whose fingers are interlocked and have him thrust you enough so you can reach the top bunk.
When going up the top bunk, always make sure the technique you use is safe. Especially when kids are involved, you cannot risk accidents due to lack of supervision and guidance from adults when going up and down the bunk bed. Again, always ensure the bunk bed and all its parts, including the ladder, the head board, the foot board, and other parts are sturdy and safe for use.
