5 Effective Ways to Help a Baby Sleep Better Through the Night
62There are many ways to help your baby sleep well and through the night. For instance, you can play soft music, choose a good sleeping location, give relaxing bathtimes, offer warm milk and pay attention to the cradle ambience.
Being a parent is a highly demanding and time consuming job, and it is one that can only be executed when fueled by immeasurable love. Getting your baby to sleep through the night can be very stressful for new parents. Here are some ways to help your little one and you get a more restful night:
Soft music
Babies generally respond well to lullabies and soft music. This helps relax them, and with the proper tune, your little one may get drowsy faster and sleep right through the night without waking up till dawn. Some parents opt for cute baby mobiles to hang over the baby’s cot, while other parents choose to sing their precious ones to sleep. Both ways work just as well, but for convenience’s sake, some parents choose a sound machine that will produce ambient sounds to lull a baby to sleep. Due to habit, your baby will soon associate this sound with rest and sleep and fall asleep easier as time passes.
Sleeping location
It is important not to vary your baby’s sleeping location too much as this confuses your child and can make falling asleep harder. You may choose to let your child sleep in a bassinet in your room or have a sleeping cot specially installed in his or her own nursery. Each time you put your child down to go to sleep, keep his or her bedtime constant and the sleeping location similar. When you do this, it is much easier for your child to adapt to sleeping times, feeding times and morning.
Relaxing bathtime
Some experts have found that after a warm relaxing bath, children tend to fall asleep easier. This is true for babies as well. If you want your baby to have a restful night, start his or her night with a warm bath filled with scented lavender or chamomile oil. Then give him or her a massage with calming baby oil and powder. Like adults, babies sleep better when they’re clean and fresh after a long day. This is also a great opportunity for new parents to bond with their newborns.
Warm milk
A well-fed baby is less likely to wake up in the middle of the night, wailing with hunger. Warm a bottle of milk and feed your baby each night before bed so that he or she gets more restful sleep during the night. Be sure to do this at least an hour before bed to allow for digestion so that your baby doesn’t regurgitate the milk in the middle of the night.
Cradle ambience
Research has shown that babies sleep better when they’re swaddled at night. This creates a comfy, cozy atmosphere for them and leads to more restful sleep. However, it is advised that you only swaddle your baby during bedtime, so that he or she associates it with sleeping time. Besides that, try putting up cute pictures of baby animals around the cradle as these can help calm down your baby and slowly help him or her fall asleep.
It takes some experience as well as some trial and error to get a sleeping ritual right. Each child is different, and over time, you’ll understand your child’s needs and wants and learn how to interpret them better.
