6 Common Tools Used For Woodturning
67
Read and know which what are some woodworking tools and how are they used.
Some tools used for woodworking are roughing gouge, bowl gouge, skew chisel, hollowing tool, scraper, and a spindle gouge.
Woodturning is a field of woodworking by means of a lathe to shape wood. It is distinct from other woodworking processes as it uses a stationary tool cut and shape a moving wood. Woodturning uses various tools which are generally made from 3 different types of metal: the high speed steel, carbon steels, and the powdered metal. To perform a woodturning project, get to know some of the tools you might use.
Roughing gouge
A roughing gouge is a cutting tool with wide flutes used to round a wooden spindle, and to create a shape out of it. It is not preferred for cutting end grain because of the large cut it takes and fragile tang connecting the blade to the handle. Not advisable to be used in making faceplate work or bowls.
Bowl gouge
A bowl gouge is a cutting tool with deep flutes used to turn the outer and inner parts of bowls and some vessels. Because it is used to cut a little further away from the handset and endure the forces of turning a bowl, it usually has a thicker shaft and longer handles than the spindle gouge.
Skew chisel
It is a chisel with wide steep points that has a running edge at an angle to the lenght of the tool. Skew chisels can be used only for spindle work and are refined after sharpening to create a razor edge. It is used to polish flat spindles, cut the beads, and for additional details.
Hollowing tool
These are various tools used to cut out the deeper sections of the steep bowls, vases and some hollow vessels. They often come along with long handles to have enough leverage upon doing the job on a deep vessel, further away from the handrest.
Scraper
This tool scrapers the wood fibers instead of cutting it. These are primarily used to polish off wooden items being cut by other tools and to give shape to items that are difficult to shape with the use of gouges. Only the dull scraper actually gives the shape. A burr at the edge cuts the wood.
Spindle gouge
A spindle gouge or a detail gouge are cutting tools with shallow flutes used to give details to spindles, which include beads and coves.
The woodworking process though may require the skill of a craftsman. Observe extra care when using these tools to maintain safety.

The photo on this page IS a scraper, but it is NOT a scraper used in lathe work. Please look at other images using Google or Ebay.
