There are 3 main reasons of why MICR toner is used for printing checks: bank clearing system, fraud security and due diligence.

MICR toner or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition toner is technology used for character reading within printed checks before clearing them within the financial institution. It allows computers to read the characters on the checks and translates them for specific account information. MICR prints are easy to read and even can be read by the naked eye compared to bar codes and and other similar technologies. However, its uniqueness relies within the type of ink being used. This special ink is of magnetic type and this is where computers base their reading within the special fonts or characters in the bottom of the checks.
